Report
Callum Wilson’s dramatic stoppage-time strike kept West Ham United out of the relegation zone as they beat Everton 2-1.
It looked like the spoils would be shared at London Stadium, where Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s 88th-minute volley cancelled out an earlier Tomas Soucek header.
At that point, the Hammers were set to slip back into the bottom three, with 18th-place Tottenham Hotspur beating relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Molineux and going above them on goal difference.
However, in the second minute of stoppage time, Jarrod Bowen cushioned a deep ball back across the area for Wilson to send the home fans into ecstasy.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side remain in 17th place on 36 points, but crucially, maintain a two-point gap to Spurs.
Everton, meanwhile, have dropped to 11th, on 47 points, after missing the chance to move level on points with sixth-place Brighton & Hove Albion.
How the match unfolded
Despite a couple of positive bursts from Crysencio Summerville, Everton registered the only attempt on target in a cagey first half courtesy of Thierno Barry, who called Mads Hermansen into action when he let fly from distance.
But West Ham made a purposeful start to the second half, with Summerville’s cross finding Valentin Castellanos, who was denied by Jordan Pickford. A VAR check for a penalty followed, but the referee’s on-field decision of a corner stood.
And West Ham were thankful for that when Bowen whipped in a brilliant delivery, from which Soucek broke the deadlock in the 51st minute.
Soucek somehow diverted Barry’s goalbound header on to the crossbar at the other end. Mateus Fernandes was perhaps fortunate to escape unpunished after handling in the area, with a VAR check not finding enough reason to recommend an on-field review for handball.
Yet Everton’s pressure eventually told when James Tarkowski nodded back a cross for Dewsbury-Hall to lash into the roof of the net, seemingly snatching a point for birthday boy David Moyes on his 750th Premier League managerial appearance.
There was to be another dramatic twist, though, with Wilson’s calm finish from close range securing what could prove to be a crucial three points for West Ham.
