Match Report: Brighton and Hove Albion vs Chelsea
Brighton & Hove Albion leapfrogged Chelsea into the Premier League’s top six with a 3-0 win over Liam Rosenior’s struggling Blues, who have now suffered five straight defeats.
The Seagulls dominated the first half at the American Express Stadium, taking the lead when Ferdi Kadioglu’s drive deflected in off Wesley Fofana three minutes in.
And though Chelsea showed more fight after Rosenior abandoned his move to a three-man backline at half-time, Jack Hinshelwood tucked past Robert Sanchez in the 56th minute.
There was more pain to come for Chelsea as Danny Welbeck added a stoppage-time third to equal the goalscoring record for Brighton in a single Premier League season, also held by Glenn Murray (2018/19).
Brighton might feel they have an outside chance of reaching Europe’s premier club competition, having jumped to sixth, five points away from Liverpool.
How the match unfolded
Only a fine one-handed save from former Brighton goalkeeper Sanchez kept Kaoru Mitoma’s early volley out, but the Seagulls did not have to wait long for the breakthrough.
The resulting corner flicked off Jorrel Hato and landed at the feet of Kadioglu, whose first-time strike wrongfooted Sanchez after hitting Fofana.
Sanchez made another good save from Jan Paul van Hecke’s header before he got away with a huge mistake. The Chelsea goalkeeper passed straight to Carlos Baleba, who squared the ball for Hinshelwood, only for Trevoh Chalobah to recover with a goalline clearance.
Chelsea briefly improved after half-time, but after both teams had penalty appeals waved away, Georginio Rutter raced forward on the counter and slipped Hinshelwood in for a simple finish.
That goal boosted Brighton’s confidence further, and Mitoma was unfortunate to see his strike fizz wide after nonchalantly juggling the ball, while Sanchez parried Kadioglu’s curler.
Chelsea did not have a single shot on target, failing to score in five straight Premier League games for the first time ever, and Brighton added more gloss when Welbeck emphatically turned Maxim De Cuyper’s cross home.
