📖 Match Report

South Korea opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a gritty and dramatic comeback victory over Czechia, defeating the Czech Republic 2–1 in a second-half thriller at the Estadio Guadalajara. It was a result that sent the Korean fans in the stands — and millions watching around the world — into rapturous celebrations.

A Cagey First Half

The opening 45 minutes were largely forgettable, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm in the Mexican heat. South Korea, led by the ever-present captain Son Heung-min — appearing at his fourth World Cup and now playing for Los Angeles FC in MLS — dominated possession but failed to convert their early opportunities. Son himself came agonisingly close, planting one effort wide of the bottom-left corner before losing his footing when well-placed to shoot. The livewire Lee Kang-in (PSG) was a constant menace, but Czechia’s organised defence held firm. Both sets of players were met with jeers from a half-empty stadium as they trudged off at the break.

Czechia Strike First

The second half burst into life when Czechia, making their first World Cup appearance since 2006, broke the deadlock through a moment of set-piece ingenuity. In the 59th minute, a trademark long throw from right-back Vladimir Coufal found its way into the penalty area, and Czech captain Ladislav Krejcí rose superbly to head the ball past goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. It was against the run of play but perfectly executed — Czechia silencing the crowd and stunning a Korean side that had controlled large swathes of the match.

South Korea’s Brilliant Fightback

South Korea refused to buckle. Eight minutes after conceding, the Koreans were level in stunning fashion. Lee Kang-in played a scooped, incisive pass to find Hwang In-beom on the left side of the penalty area. The Feyenoord midfielder showed nerves of steel, sitting Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar down with a delicious drag-back before curling the ball into the far corner. It was a goal of real quality, and it lit the Estadio Guadalajara alight.

The turnaround was complete in the 80th minute. Hwang — clearly the man of the match — drove forward and delivered a teasing cross from the right flank. Substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu (Beşiktaş) arrived with perfect timing, turning the ball into the bottom-left corner with his left foot to give South Korea the lead. The bench erupted, Son punched the air, and the Korean faithful in the stands were in absolute ecstasy.

A Heroic Last Stand

Czechia pressed hard for an equaliser and nearly found one in the 82nd minute when Adam Hlozek got to a dangerous cross and fired goalward at close range — only to be denied by a stunning low stop from keeper Kim Seung-gyu. Moments later, in stoppage time, another Czech effort from Michal Sadilek was also repelled. It was to prove their last chance, as South Korea held on to claim a famous and vital three points.

It is also worth noting that Tomas Soucek thought he had equalised but celebrations were halted by the offside flag — another crucial moment that ultimately swung the match in South Korea’s favour.

🌟 Player of the Match — Hwang In-beom

There was only one candidate for this award. Hwang In-beom (Feyenoord) was extraordinary — a goal and an assist in a World Cup match, making him only the third South Korean player ever to achieve that feat, following Choi Soon-ho (vs Italy, 1986) and head coach Hong Myung-bo himself (vs Spain, 1994). His match rating of 7.88 was the highest on the pitch.

Lee Kang-in was equally influential — completing all 37 of his passes, winning 10 of his 14 duels, and creating three chances. A performance of breathtaking technical precision from the PSG star.

  • Oh Hyeon-gyu became the 8th South Korean player to score on his first World Cup appearance, and the 5th to do so as a substitute.
  • Son Heung-min, 33, is playing in his 4th World Cup. He entered the tournament with 3 World Cup goals and is chasing the record for the most World Cup goals by an Asian player.
  • Czechia are playing in their first World Cup since 2006, a gap of 20 years.
  • South Korea had an xG of 1.84 vs Czechia’s 0.81, reflecting their dominance in quality chances throughout the match.
  • The attendance at Estadio Guadalajara was 44,985 — though hundreds of seats were visibly empty during the match.

💬 What It Means

For South Korea, this is an enormous result. After dominating the ball for large periods against a well-organised Czechia side, their second-half resilience and quality in the final third showed that this team — under coach Hong Myung-bo — is a genuine threat in Group A. With Mexico and South Africa still to come, a place in the knockout rounds is now firmly in their sights.

For Czechia, the defeat is a bitter blow. They showed glimpses of their defensive quality but were ultimately undone by individual brilliance. Having waited 20 long years to return to the World Cup stage, they will need to regroup quickly.

“South Korea no longer fears the World Cup stage.” — Coach Hong Myung-bo
