Recap
West Ham United climbed out of the Premier League’s relegation zone as Valentin Castellanos and Konstantinos Mavropanos both scored twice in a 4-0 rout of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Mavropanos met Jarrod Bowen’s cross with a towering header to put the Hammers ahead late in the first half, though the atmosphere at the London Stadium remained tense until just beyond the hour mark.
Two Castellanos goals in less than two minutes then took the contest away from Wolves, with his first being brilliantly assisted by Pablo’s flick.
Mavropanos joined Castellanos in securing his brace with an acrobatic volley seven minutes from time, as the Hammers boosted both their points tally and their goal difference.
The result lifts West Ham up to 17th with Tottenham Hotspur replacing them in the bottom three, while Wolves remain bottom and could be relegated as early as next weekend if they lose to Leeds United.
How the match unfolded
Crysencio Summerville lifted the ball over the bar on the stretch when a clever pass from Mateus Fernandes created the first opening for West Ham, though Wolves looked more accomplished in possession early on.
However, the Hammers went ahead in the 42nd minute as, after Wolves failed to fully clear their lines from a corner, Bowen teased in a wonderful cross that Mavropanos nodded home.
The second half started with chances at both ends as Wolves midfielder Angel Gomes rattled Mads Hermansen’s woodwork with a ferocious free-kick, and Summerville almost caught Jose Sa off his line from 40 yards out after West Ham swiftly counter-attacked. Moments later, Bowen curled against the far post after cutting in from the right.
West Ham got the all-important second goal in the 66th minute, with Pablo’s inventive pass releasing Castellanos in behind to finish, and they were not done there.
The hosts killed any hope of a Wolves fightback straight from the restart with Castellanos securing the fastest quickfire double of the Premier League season. His 68th-minute shot deflected in off Andre after Joao Gomes surrendered possession.
Mavropanos then hooked beyond Sa at the far post, making West Ham only the second team this season to have two players score doubles in the same match, after Arsenal achieved it twice.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side even passed up a chance to add a fifth goal, as Hammers substitute Adama Traore skewed wide when in a one-v-one situation.
